Chapter 11

Samuel

Despite the massive amount of sugar the boys consumed from those cookies, it actually wasn’t hard to get them to bed. It was a school night and he wanted them well rested for the morning. Leo and Hudson had lots of learning to do and Rowan would be going to Rory’s and he didn’t want him giving him any trouble because he was tired and cranky. Not that he would ever act that way. He’d probably be just as quiet as he ever was. Rory had told Samuel that all three boys were always so quiet. Together. Separate. It was unnerving, but also understandable. Fraiser was a good kid and loved the boys all the same, but Samuel knew that it would be easier for him to look after them if they would engage with him and play with him.

Now that all three boys were in bed, Samuel sat across the couch from Lily in the living room. It was summer, but the evening would have been better if he’d been able to light a fire in the fireplace. The room would have been cozy. He could have made tea or coffee, whichever Lily preferred. Instead, they both had tall glasses of ice cold water from the fridge. There was no fire and since he hated the feeling of air conditioning, the cabin was overwarm as it was, the logs holding the heat of the day.

He looked around the room, wishing that it was strewn with toys, messy from a day of hard play, but the boys were so neat and tidy. Leo and Hudson only ever read or used their tablets and Rowan had shown no interest in toys. He hoped that would change.

Tonight, he’d seen another glimpse of what the three of them must have been like before the tragedy in their lives and it was beautiful. He didn’t want to collect those moments and guard them feverishly. He wanted there to be such an abundance of them that there was nothing to be guarded because whatever container he collected them in inside his own mind would be overflowing.

The silence between him and Lily wasn’t tense, but he knew he had to say something anyway. Mostly because he wanted to talk to her, with her. There were a thousand things he needed to say. She probably had double that amount of questions. She didn’t immediately plunge into it. Whether she was truly content or just giving him time, he knew they couldn’t just sit there quietly thinking their own thoughts forever.

“Thank you for making time for the boys,” he whispered. “For including them on our date.” It probably went unspoken that most people’s idea of a first date wouldn’t include three little boys.

Not Lily. She continued to surprise him. She truly wasn’t like anyone he’d ever met. Her eyes sparkled, a carbonated sky all shaken and fizzy with joy. “Of course! I genuinely love seeing them. They’re amazing kids.”

“Some people might use the word difficult in place of amazing.
